We climb ladders, chase promotions, and build empires—all in service of some distant version of ourselves who will finally have time to enjoy life. But what if that future version of you wants exactly what you already have?

There’s a parable that captures this perfectly:

An American businessman visits Mexico and meets a local fisherman. The American was shocked to learn the fisherman only works a few hours a day.

“What do you do with the rest of your time?” the American asks.

“I sleep late, hang out with my family, read, take naps, and play guitar with my friends,” the fisherman says.

“You are doing this all wrong. I have an idea,” says the American. “You should work all day. Borrow money and buy another boat. Hire more fishermen to work for you. You could make so much money that you will be retired in ten years.”

“What would I do in retirement?” the fisherman asks.

“You could sleep late, hang out with my family, read, take naps, and play guitar with my friends,” Seeing a room full of people who chose to spend their evening sharing stories, challenges, and things they are building was insightful.

Roberto’s journey reminded us that going all-in isn’t just about quitting your job; it’s about committing to the iteration, to the feedback, to the process. And that’s exactly what IndieMilano is about—creating a space where we can iterate together, fail together, and hopefully succeed together.

The journey ahead is long, and I don’t know exactly where this community will go. But I do know that yesterday, I left that meetup more energized than I’ve felt in months. And judging by the conversations that continued long after the official end time, I wasn’t the only one.

So if you’re in Milan (or planning to be) and you’re building something—whether it’s your first side project or your third pivot—come join us. Let’s build our bubble together.

See you at the next meetup.

One of the most successful Indie Peter Level encouraged us to start by solving our own problems, by looking at our own lives and observing what our daily challenges are.

Even if it’s not always successful, the concept of solving our own problems is a great way to find ideas that might be viable. A lot of people don’t do this. When you try to solve problems that aren’t even yours, like somebody else’s, you can do that, but you are not an expert in the problem area.

Once we find the idea to build, the first thing before starting to write one line of code is to validate our idea. The worst is to be with people who just confirm what you already think. The best is to test your ideas as quickly as possible. Even asking other people for advice is kind of bullshit. You can’t ask “will this idea work?” You need to ask the market by building it. Nobody knows until you launch.

After the idea validation, we need to start building the MVP (Minimum viable product). One concept that resonated a lot with me is to “don’t make shitty products”. With minimum viable products, there’s been a rise in people shipping products that look bad and hardly work. A first prototype should function really well. It’s fine if there are some bugs on the side, but the core functionality should be operational. It should look at least OK; otherwise, you simply turn people away. Minimum needs to be minimum good.

When building, try to build fast and minimal. Instead of learning new stuff, use the tools you already know to build your idea. Make sure your MVP actually works and is not just a landing page that doesn’t do anything. Lose your perfectionism; it’ll never be perfect anyway. Don’t outsource, build it yourself. If you can’t code, use off-the-shelf tools and connect APIs together to build it. Appreciate your constraints and limitations; they can be a giant advantage vs. people with lots of resources. Build for the web first; you can go native mobile later. Don’t build on an MVP too long; a good rule of thumb is to spend a maximum of one month on it and launch.

After building and launching, we faced the growth phase. Growth should be mostly natural and organic. Especially in the early stages (e.g. after launch) of your product. First off, it’s free; you don’t need to pay for ads or traffic. Secondly, it gives you direct feedback on whether your product is good enough or not. If you’re using non-organic ways of growth like ads, you’ll see your product’s usage grow. And you might think things are going well. But when you stop paying for those ads, those users are probably gone fast.

Tell about your own journey and maybe struggles before or during the build-up to your product. Before I had anything really successful, I had a YouTube channel for electronic music that made some money. That money made it possible for me to travel and work somewhere else than home. That experience helped me make a site for those travelers. And that process of building a bootstrapped startup gave me the information I’m sharing with you now in this book.

One way of storytelling is building in public. The last few years, one of the most effective strategies to get promotion has been to “build in public”. It means to publicly blog, vlog, or in any way communicate the entire story of building your product or startup from the start. You’re completely transparent about how things are going, even if things don’t go so well. It’s about sharing the stuff you learn from trying to build a product.

So, what’s the best “hack” ever to get people to come back and grow a product? Make a really useful and great product! That’s way more efficient than trying to get users to share stuff on social networks, emailing them, or sending them push notifications to come back to your site, or trying to get into the press all the time. If people really love your product, they’ll come back to it. It’ll be planted in their mind. They need it! So whatever you do, focus on making the product great first. Then think about growth later.

The most important message that I can give you in your future path of building products, or even the rest of your life, is to take action. Taking action is the scariest, most difficult part of life. It’s also your biggest competitive advantage. Why? Because most people don’t. There are millions of wannabe artists, entrepreneurs, and creatives who have really great ideas, but never take the action to finish something, launch it, and push it out there. The people that you know who are successful are usually not the best, but they were the ones getting over their fear and taking action.

How Payments Work: Clearing and Settlement

How does money actually move from our bank account to the merchant bank account?

Gerson Enriquez

In the previous post, we saw how the Authorization process works. Now, let’s examine the steps that follow a payment authorization: the Clearing and Settlement phases.

The swipe of the card, referred to as the Authorization, typically puts a hold on funds in the cardholder’s account. So, for example, if you look at any of your credit card or debit card online statements, you will see a section at the top of the screen showing “Pending Transactions.” This is because the transaction hasn’t officially cleared. In most cases, a transaction will clear the following day, but there could be other instances where it takes longer to clear.

How does money actually move from our bank account to the merchant bank account?

Clearing happens toward the end of the day for most Merchants and will factor in tips, transaction reversals, and returns. This is basically the Merchant confirming these transactions are valid and that these funds are ready to be moved or “settled.” Settlement is the actual movement of money from the cardholder’s bank account, the Issuing Bank, to the Merchant’s bank account, the Acquiring Bank. This movement of money typically happens via Fedwire ( an electronic funds transfer system operated by the U.S. Federal Reserve Banks that enables financial institutions to make large, same-day, and irrevocable payments to each other in real-time) as instructed by the payment networks.

To make the concept of Clearing and Settlement stick, let’s imagine we are purchasing a mocha coffee at Starbucks’. The coffee was 4.75€, and we added a tip of 1€. The Authorization transaction, or the first part of the dual-message transaction, was for 4.75€, and that was approved before we got our mocha. The Issuer Processor checked to make sure that we had at least 4.75€ in our bank account. Our available balance went down before we ordered the mocha; we had exactly 1,000€ in our bank checking account. At the time of Authorization, there was a funds hold placed on 4.75€ out of 1,000€, but at this time, the money hadn’t moved. So, our actual bank balance remained at 1,000€ until the transaction settled. However, our available balance will show up as 995.25€. This means that if we were to go out and try to purchase something for more than 995.25€, the transaction would get declined because it exceeded our available balance.

Our actual balance will go down at Settlement. Now, we will see a transaction of 5.75€( 4.75€+ the 1.00€ tip). Our available balance will be 994.25€ ( 1,000€ beginning balance – 4.75€ for the coffee– 1€ tip). At this point, Mastercard, via Fedwire, has moved the money out of our bank account into the bank account of Starbucks’ Merchant Acquirer. Starbucks’ Merchant Acquirer then sends the money to Starbucks’ bank account via Automated Clearing House (ACH).

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

During Settlement, the Card Network, Mastercard, does not send to Starbucks the full 5.75€ for our coffee and tip. The Card Network will:

• Keep a percentage of the 5.75€ for itself as the Network Assessment Fee.

• Take a percentage of the 5.75€ and pass it on to the card Issuer as the Interchange Fee.

Transacting via debit or credit card doesn’t cost us anything. However, the Merchant is charged by the card network. So, in this case, Starbucks pays a few fees for this transaction that are netted out of the total transaction value of our mocha. This percentage varies greatly based on:

• Location

• Merchant Type

• Type of card you are using (credit versus debit, and even within these two types, is it a business card or a consumer card, or by card network tiers like “World” and “Platinum”)

• Transaction mode (was it a signature transaction versus a Personal Identification Number (PIN) debit transaction, and how the transaction was done [i.e., was the chip used? Was it done online?])

That’s it.

Understanding the journey from Authorization to Clearing and Settlement reveals the complex choreography that happens behind every card swipe. What seems instantaneous to us—buying a coffee—actually unfolds over hours or even days, involving multiple parties, networks, and systems working in concert.

But here’s something even more fascinating to consider: the numbers you see in your bank account? They’re just that—numbers on a screen. They represent a promise from your bank, not a vault filled with your actual cash. When you see a balance of €1,000, or even €300,000, that money isn’t sitting in a drawer with your name on it. Banks operate on a fractional reserve system, meaning they keep only a small portion of deposits on hand and lend or invest the rest. This is why, if you tried to withdraw €300,000 in cash all at once, your bank would likely need advance notice—the physical money simply isn’t there waiting for you.

In essence, modern banking is built on trust and accounting ledgers. The “available balance” versus “actual balance” distinction we explored with our Starbucks example is just the tip of the iceberg. Every transaction, every balance, every payment is part of an intricate web of settlements that keeps our financial system running smoothly—as long as we all believe in the numbers on the screen.

---

Want to learn more?

This post is part of my upcoming course, where you’ll learn the payment process flow and learn how to integrate payment systems such as Stripe and Paddle. I was learning a lot from my more experienced teammates, and I was genuinely happy.

After a year, a new project emerged. The team decided to keep Java for the backend but switch from jQuery to React, a new library at the time. I saw this as a great opportunity to learn new technologies, so I asked my manager if I could work on the project. He agreed.

The beginning was tough. I needed to learn a completely new library while delivering features at the same time. I started reading the documentation, searching for books, and exploring anything that could help. That’s how I discovered a meetup specifically dedicated to React—it was a blessing.

I attended my first React meetup, and it was amazing. I discovered a whole new world and fell in love instantly. The room was full of curious developers, eager to learn and discuss the latest trend at the time: React hooks. Before diving deep, let’s make it clear the nomenclature of different types of paying with a card:

• Swiping it: the card’s magnetic stripe is slid across the card reader.

• Dipping it: the card’s chip is inserted into the card reader.

• Tapping it: the card, mobile phone, or smartwatch is tapped on a contactless terminal.

•Entering it: typing it into a web browser to buy something online.

But what is actually happening when this swipe, dip, or tap occurs? How is money taken out of your account and into the hands of the merchant?

Authorization comes to the rescue!

Authorization happens at the moment of the swipe, dip, or tap at the payment terminal. This action typically places a hold of funds on the cardholder’s account if the cardholder has enough money in their account, or it may decline the transaction if the cardholder doesn’t have enough money in their account or if other restrictions are on this type of spend, as we saw in the previous post.

<a class="image-link image2 on. You, the person who is buying a new amazing course online, are involved in a Dual-Message Signature transaction with your debit card. Typically, an Authorization (message One) happens at the time of swipe, which was the process discussed above. This is then followed up with a Clearing phase (message Two) that happens in bulk at the end of the night, which will be discussed in the following blog post. In some cases, the Authorization message (message one) can be different from the Clearing (message two) if a tip is included (maybe if you pay a lunch in a restaurant) or some adjustment is made.

As you can see, a lot goes on within a very short period of time at the time of Authorization. The process is very quick because the networks are standardized on the ISO 8583 message. The ISO 8583 message is very compact and can travel quickly among the Payment Terminal, Acquirer Processor, Network, and the Issuer Processor.

The Authorization process places a hold on funds, but doesn’t actually move money at that very moment. The money gets withdrawn in the clearing process, which is what we will look at in our next post.

---

Want to learn more?

This post is part of my upcoming course, where you’ll learn the payment process flow and learn how to integrate payment systems such as Stripe and Paddle. never do anything just for the money. In the past, I used to follow some content creators who were involved in businesses such as Amazon FBA, Dropshipping, and self-publishing. They seemed to be making a lot of money, and for a young person could be something attractive; however, I always thought, I really don’t want to make money like this. In fact, most of them are now doing other things, and someone has also disappeared from YouTube. What is important, in my opinion, is to be involved with something we like.

When you make a business, you get to make a little universe where you control all the laws. This is your utopia. When you make a dream come true for yourself, it will be a dream come true for someone else, too. Start from yourself, we are the first customer of our business! I am the first customer of my HappyBudget product. I started because I changed my phone from Android to iPhone, and I really didn’t want to download another financial app, but make one tailor-made for me, so the core of the app is the method I use, but I need to evolve it to make it a bit more general to engage other users as well.

Never forget that absolutely everything you do is for your customers. It’s counterintuitive, but the way to grow your business is to focus entirely on your existing customers. Just thrill them, and they will tell everyone. I really love the customer orientation, for sure, it is one of the most important things in business, people will choose one company over another just because they like the customer service.

Start now, no funding needed. It usually means they are more in love with the idea of being big big big than with actually doing something useful. For an idea to get big big big, it has to be useful, and being useful doesn’t need funding. Hello Solopreneurs!

What’s your long-term goal? I don’t have one; I surpassed my goals long ago. I’m just trying to help musicians with whatever they need today. So please don’t think you need a huge vision. Just stay focused on helping people today. Again, help people!

Pay attention to what excites you and what drains you. I am doing this a lot in this period and focusing more on the problems I can solve with software.

It’s proven that after a certain point, money doesn’t create any happiness at all, but only headaches. I cannot confirm it… yet.

When you want to learn how to do something yourself, most people won’t understand. They will assume the only reason we do anything is to get it done, and doing it yourself is not the most efficient way. But that’s forgetting about the joy of learning and doing. Yes, it may take longer, it may even cost you millions of dollars in lost opportunities, because your business is growing more slowly, because you are insisting on doing something yourself. It was an internal project designed to help company managers take control of various aspects, including customer relations, project management, and employee holidays. It was 2017, and the project stack was Spring Boot on the back-end and JSP with JQuery on the front-end, let’s say not a cutting-edge technology.

I was a junior developer still finishing my university studies but I was learning very fast, in fact, I decided not to proceed the studies after my bachelor degree because I was getting so much value from my work comparing to all the theory in the university (I regret a bit for that because I know in the master degree there are most exciting learning paths).

I was working on both sides, the front and the back, and I really like it. In parallel, I was reading some books like Design Patterns or Modern Java to help me improve my programming skills.

After a year working on that project, at a certain point, a new project was being born, and I still remember my manager with the architects of our software factory discussing which technology to use. On the backend, the decision was easy: Java. On the frontend, there were two technologies competing: Angular and React.

Eventually, they decided to go with React, and I thought it was an opportunity not to be missed to learn a new technology, so I asked my manager if I could be part of the new project even if I was working on the other one. He accepted, and I found myself in charge of the frontend part of the new project.

It was tough, I needed to learn very fast, so I was looking for documentation, courses, and even in-person meetups (I found it and now I organize it 😅, but I will tell you this story in a future blog post). That’s why I told myself, from now I only want to focus on the front-end side so I can increase my seniority faster.

I became a specialist, I narrowed my hard skills to the fundamentals of the web, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and I chose only one library to work with, you guessed it: React.

Time passes, and after almost 10 years, I decided to become a freelancer, but I don’t want to stop there; I would like to become a product builder, being able to transform ideas into production software.

I recently listen an interview between Freddy Vega (from Platzi) and Guillermo Rauch (from Vercel) in Spanish since they are both from South America that it’s a thing I’m proud of, and Guillermo said specialization is for insects, I don’t know who is the author of that quote but it doesn’t matter, what matters for me is being aware of the phases in our careers.
<div course that will help us take that leap in our careers.

In this article, we will see who the players are involved when we swipe our physical card or click the pay button on a checkout online page.

When we land on the checkout page of the Merchant that just released the amazing course we would like to buy, we need to be sure we own and have a card, so we are the Cardholders. Sometimes it could be a physical piece of plastic with a magnetic stripe at the top and a chip. Sometimes it could be a virtual card that is just the card number shown in an app, which can be used for online transactions. Sometimes the card could be tokenized, meaning that it is a card stored in the phone’s wallet, like Apple Pay or Google Pay, and then used to “Tap and Pay.”

The card is provided by an Issuing Bank, in Italy could be Intesa San Paolo, Unicredit, etc. The process of going into the physical location of a Bank to open up a checking account is called Know Your Customer (KYC), because we would need to answer a series of questions that help the bank identify us such as the name, social security number, date of birth, physical address, phone number, potentially some other form of identification like a driver’s license, etc. This is done primarily to prevent bad actors from entering the financial system. It checks to make sure that we are not funding terrorist activity or have not participated in money-laundering activities.

Then, the Merchant, needs a machine that can read the card that is provided by a Merchant Acquirer, such as Nexi, for example. For online merchants, this is referred to as a payment gateway such as Stripe.

Thirdly, the linkage between the card and the card reader is the Payment Network, such as Mastercard or Visa. The Payment Network provides the rails for card-based transactions to occur. They sit in between Acquirers and Issuers and pass messages back and forth to make the transaction happen. The Payment Network also sets the communications rules and standards that the Acquirers and Issuers need to adhere to.

These are the players involved at the moment of the card swipe:

Issuer: An Issuer or Issuing Bank’s function is to underwrite the user by giving them a bank account, a debit card, and potentially access to credit facilities.

Issuer processor: The Issuer needs a technology provider that can connect with the payment networks. Usually, the Issuer Processor will have a piece of hardware in their data centers and a fast network connection directly to the payment networks to approve or decline a transaction. Sometimes, the Issuer may have built this technology in-house or may rely on a third-party Issuer Processor to handle this.

Merchant Acquirer: The Merchant Acquirer goes out and acquires Merchants and provides them with the tools and facilities to accept and process card-based payments.

Payment Network: Sometimes referred to as a “Card Scheme” or just as a “Network.” Examples of Payment Networks include Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. These Payment Networks provide the rails for card-based transactions to occur.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" that in the next chapter). This state typically lasts three seconds or less, but within those three seconds, a lot is happening. A message goes from the payment terminal to its Acquirer Processor with the amount of the transaction, location of the transaction, Merchant type, and the card number. The Acquirer Processor then determines that this is a Mastercard and routes it to the Mastercard Network. Mastercard then sees this transaction and, based on the card’s number, it looks for the first six digits of the card, also referred to as the card’s Bank Identification Number (BIN), and determines that this BIN belongs to ISP Bank. Mastercard sends a message to ISP Bank with the card number, amount of the transaction, location of the transaction, and Merchant type. ISP Bank’s Issuer Processor then looks at this data and decides whether this transaction should be approved. The key things it will ask based on the information it has received from Mastercard are:

Is the user card active?

Does the user have enough money in his account to cover the cost of this transaction?

Can the user card be used at this Merchant?

Does this transaction raise any sort of fraud flags based on location, prior activity, or type of Merchant?

If all of these questions get answered favorably, then ISP Bank’s Issuer Processor will send back a message to Mastercard that the transaction is approved. It will place a hold with the amount of the course on our bank account, and the transaction will appear as “Pending”. Mastercard will then relay this decision from the Issuer to the Acquirer. The Acquirer Processor will then send a message to the payment terminal to approve the transaction. The terminal (in our case, the Stripe checkout page) then makes the button background green to indicate the approval of the transaction, then we usually get redirected to a success page, and a confirmation email is sent with the receipt of the order.

In the next chapter of this series, we will deep dive into the Authorization process part.

A New Journey

Why I chose to become a freelance and start building products as a Solopreneur.

Gerson Enriquez

When I started my university studies, I remembered that I had a goal in my mind: I had to work for a big company before I was 25.

In some way, maybe the law of attraction, I don’t know, I started working at 24 years old for what I considered at that time a big company, it was a classic IT consultancy company here in Milan, so I was thrilled, I got along with my colleagues and with my team. In fact, I stayed with that company for almost three years, which was the longest period I had spent in the same company.

Thanks for reading! I thought I would like to stay here for a long period and climb the company ladder.

The first period was very nice, mostly for the cultural environment, smart colleagues, and gatherings in the headquarters once per quarter.

Unfortunately, when a company gives you so much, most of the time it will ask you a lot.

I have had some arguments with a colleague in my team, and little by little, my performance decreased.

My one-on-one meetings with my manager weren’t so good, and over time, the stress increased. I started to feel sad, and in some way trapped, and I felt it wasn’t what I wanted for myself, even if it is the most sponsored path by society.

But there is a saying that if you make a fish climb a tree, it will feel stupid, and again, the value of someone or something depends sometimes on where you are, as you know, a bottle of water can cost 50 cents at the supermarket, 1 euro at the bar, and 4 euros at the airport.

So I reflected a lot about my values, what makes me really happy, and how I wanted to live.

That’s how I realized what I appreciate most, and I wanted to remember every day, and that’s why I wrote it on my skin.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Each person has their own definition. What I mean by freedom is to live by my own rules. Yes, for me, freedom is not the absence of rules; the rules are important, but they are my rules.

Wake up at the time I prefer, work on the projects that excite me most, or take a holiday in a period that is not necessarily August, and at the same time earn money from projects I built. The definition of success for me is different than your definition. What is important, in my opinion, is to increase our self-awareness.

Learn to know yourself. Listen to you from within. Understand what you appreciate most in life, what drains you most, and what values you want to follow.

I know each person has a different situation, a different story, and it is not easy to change. The story of payments is, in many ways, the story of civilization itself. Wherever humans gathered, traded, or collaborated, the need for value exchange emerged — and with it, the solutions that gradually shaped modern economies.

In ancient communities, trade began with bartering: swapping grain for tools, livestock for textiles, or services for goods. It was an elegant system in its simplicity, but far from efficient. Barter required a double coincidence of wants — you had to find someone who both had what you needed and wanted what you had. This limitation sparked one of humanity’s greatest innovations: money.

Thanks for reading! They were shells, beads, stones, cattle, and later, precious metals. Each culture chose something different, but the principle was always the same — to create a shared understanding of value that everyone could agree on. When societies learned to standardize metal coins, engraved with symbols of authority and authenticity, trade expanded beyond local communities.
